The works will honor Vietnamese refugees, queer Black musicians, and more.

The title borrows from educator and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune who, upon seeing the 1939 Easter Sunday performance of renowned Black opera singer Marian Anderson on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, said the performance “told a story of hope for tomorrow–a story of triumph–a story of pulling together, a story of splendor and real democracy.”

"Beyond Granite: Pulling Together," will feature installations from six leading contemporary artists exploring untold stories of the National Mall.

The National Mall is full of artistic works, from gardens to sculptures to the big marble memorials. This summer, a series of temporary art exhibits will also be coming.

Throughout the second half of 2023, the Mall and its surroundings will become home to a series of new commemorative exhibitions, performances and installations

Themes explored in next summer’s temporary exhibition may include diaspora, migration, displacement and civic gathering.
